We'll also cover event planning, looking at real life events from the point of view of both consumer and promoter. Then we'll brainstorm as a group to build our own arsenal of advertising secret weapons.

Steve, I'd like to add one area of marketing that is critical to creating your image: Quality Control. Most artists are not marketers...by nature. If you can't control the quality of your books and cd's, have someone else do that job. Get a proof reader. Test whether or not there actually is sound on the cd's you sell for $20 a pop. From a consumer viewpoint, there's nothing more frustrating than buying a cd of one of your favourite artists only to get an empty plastic disc. And, poets, if someone writes to you or calls you and says they got a defective cd or book, fer chrissake, give them one that doesn't prove your words are hollow. Unless, of course, you just need their 20 bucks and don't care what kind of press you get on your integrity.
